Fine Art for Design student Francine Green has won the 2012 Unleashed Best in the North Illustration Awards.

BA (honours) degree students Francine Green, 22 from Cleckheaton and Jasmine Edwards, 23 from Wakefield are among 12 finalists shortlisted for the competition, which is for undergraduate illustration students from northern art schools. Both students study at Kirklees College’s Batley School of Art. Francine was the overall winner and Jasmine’s entry was highly commended.

BA (Honours) Degree Fine Art for Design award leader, Eve Gray said, “I’m extremely proud of both Jasmine and Francine. This recognition is more than well deserved. What is also interesting is that Unleashed is for illustration students, who have completed three year illustration degrees.

As Fine Art for Design students, the girls have proven that through the quality of their work they can compete at a very high national level. Jasmine has had two images selected and Francine one.

“This is the second year that Jasmine has been shortlisted for the award, she was shortlisted last year as a second year student. As a competition for final year undergraduates to be shortlisted twice is another excellent achievement.

The artists attended a celebration event at Mr Thomas’s Chop House in Manchester in July, where work was exhibited and auctioned. Francine’s work was auctioned off for £700.

She said, “I was overwhelmed to find out I’d be chosen as the overall winner. The competition has reassured me that people understand the wit of my work and has given me a much needed confidence boost, whilst hopefully providing great opportunities to help the start of my career as an illustrator and designer.”
