Batley School of Art graduates create logo for YABA Josh Fox

Tuesday 14th of July 2015

Two Graphic Design graduates who have set up their own design company have created a new logo for the Yorkshire Asian Business Association.

Oli Smith and Andy Finnerty started their design company Aye! Creative after graduating from Batley School of Art in 2014 with first class honours in BA (Hons) Graphic Design.

The pair linked up with YABA president Ajaz Ahmed, who was the guest speaker at the 2014 graduation ceremony at Kirklees College.

Entrepreneur Mr Ahmed was the founder of Freeserve, once the UK's largest internet service provider, and has been mentoring Oli and Andy with their business. He said: “I spoke at last year’s graduation at Kirklees College and as a result of that I was approached by Oli and Andy who asked if I would mentor them. I agreed to help them."

“Their business has grown and they have met lots of important business people that they would not have otherwise been able to meet." Mr Ahmed was impressed with Oli and Andy’s work and asked them to look at YABA’s logo, having just taken over as president.

“Our branding was outdated and needed to be updated; we also didn’t have the funds to employ a big agency to do the work. I asked Aye! Creative if they could help us and they agreed to help for free."

“The new identity is fantastic and is as good as a big agency would have produced. “Oli and Andy have shown the qualities that you need to be a success, coming forward and approaching me to mentor them and them agreeing to help YABA which then help them in the long run. They have got a bright future. “

Oli said: “We got approached by YABA president Ajaz Ahmed to redesign the logo, which had to reflect the organisation in a better way. The old identity looked dated and didn’t look confident.“We took a simple approach, creating a friendly and modern logo design, giving YABA a more confident and professional look.”

Oli and Andy are members of Kirklees College’s alumni group, which aims to help former students to stay in touch and work with the college to inspire current students to succeed. The group is free to join and open to any former students of the college – click here for more information.
