Tuesday 13th of September 2012

Two Batley School of Art students have been awarded prizes by the Huddersfield Art Society.

18 year old Liam Carter from Linthwaite and 20 year old Chidera Ugada from Marsh were presented with the Hamer awards by the Huddersfield Art Society when their work was viewed at the CREATE end of year exhibition in June.

The students achieved triple distinction awards in the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design at the Batley School of Art. When David Whiting and Amanda Hunter from the society visited the exhibition their work was chosen for the annual award.

As part of the prize, the students’ work will go on display at Huddersfield Art Gallery from 21 September – 3 November. As first prize winner, Liam will also be delivering a presentation about his piece of art to the Huddersfield Art Society in January.

The students also received a cash prize each to help with their studies in the future. Liam will be starting the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the Batley School of Art. Chidera is heading to Northumbria University to study for a degree in Fine Art.

Tutor Richard Holling said, “This is an excellent achievement for these two exceptional students. The art industry is fiercely competitive and it’s always useful to have awards and recognition to your name as well as your qualification."

“All the students on the course worked extremely hard last year to produce another fantastic end of year show. We welcome the Huddersfield Art Society along each year and really value their comments, interaction with the students and awards. We wish all our students well after the course, many of whom are progressing onto higher education qualifications.”
